THE FIGURE AT THE WINDOW.

The figure at the window

Some images in the archive have no accompanying text. The figure at the window is one of them. It appears repeatedly, framed by the same architectural lines and the same indistinct landscape beyond.

The drawing leaves out the features of the room, as though the room itself was never the point. The figure is rendered in more detail with each revision, but the face is still deliberately unfinished.

Later entries introduce an unsettling possibility: the figure in the window may not be a visitor approaching from outside. It may be somebody trying to be remembered.

“Every time I drew the room, the figure ended up standing in the same place.”
